Movements Fairfax Concert reviews
There Was Ray . . . And Someone To Watch . . .
At the Saenger Theatre, the beautiful starry night sky on the ceiling enhanced the evening's ambiance. A clear, starry night in NOLA made for a short walk from the hotel to the venue. The opening act, The Belle Brigade, was a pleasant surprise. Barbara Gruska on drums and vocals was a force of nature and someone to definitely watch. Their song, Losers, with its memorable lyrics, is still in my head. The Row F Balcony seats provided a center stage view and extra legroom on the aisle. Movements, a gifted musician, is comfortable playing electric or acoustic guitar. His acoustic work, where his voice shines, is favored by many fans. Thankfully, he mixed up the show with a good balance of new and tried-and-true songs. The visuals were trippy, with a pulsating orb-centered screen. SuperNova was underwhelming. Movements allowed each musician to shine on stage. There were some negatives, such as the heavy bass and loud volume during parts of the show. Kudos to the sound crew for adjusting by mid-set. The excessive use of smartphones during the show was disruptive and annoying. Good music and a great show overall. The brightest star of the evening for me was the new female rock star discovered in The Belle Brigade under the Saenger Theatre's starry sky ceiling.
